Teen gang arrested for burglary in Empangeni

Burglary victim chases after five KwaMsane teenagers.

SIX teenage boys linked to a spate of burglaries in the suburbs of Empangeni have been arrested.

The juveniles aged between 14 and 16 were arrested during the early hours of Monday morning following a swift response by police.

The boys who hail from KwaMsane were held in police custody, but later released and handed over to their parents and legal guardians’ for supervision.

The group made their first appearance at the Empangeni Magistrate Court yesterday (Wednesday), facing charges of residential burglary and theft.

Burglary victim Jaques Steenkamp was woken up on Monday morning by his barking dogs and realised his home had been broken into.

‘I chased after them but soon lost sight of the boys. I then called SAPS K9 reservist Sergeant Kenny Sloane, who together with Wynand Swart from Tracker helped me.’ Steenkamp said.

‘Two boys were arrested up the road from my home. Following investigations an additional four boys were arrested in KwaMsane within a few hours.

‘Four laptops, two iPhones, two iPads, wallets and bags were stolen. Fortunately most of the items were recovered.’ Steenkamp said.

Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose commended the officers for the arrests made.

‘The arrest serves as a warning to other teenagers involved in criminal activity. May this discourage you from wrongdoing as you will face the law.’ Mbongeni said.
