FAMILIES joined hands on Friday morning to clean up the littered greenbelt running along Meerensee’s Mackerel street.
Residents recently set up a whatsapp group chat and organised the clean-up session between 7am and 8.30am.
Even youngsters in the suburb took part in the action and were rewarded with cool drink.
‘It was a very sociable and positive experience to see the reaction of Mackerel residents who want to be proud of a clean street,’ said Beate Naudé.
‘We would like to create awareness for residents to stop dumping their refuse in our greenbelts.
‘Meerensee is a unique area with so many lovely natural areas.
‘It is a privilege to have nature so close to home and a shock to see what people throw into the bush and next to our road.’
Bundles of bags of refuse from the greenbelt included metal, glass and plastics.
The do-gooders in no time turned their eyesore into a neat view.
Naudé encourages all residents in Richards Bay to start similar clean-up initiatives.
