KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended teachers for immediately alerting the police when they found a pupil with a firearm at their school.
Nongoma SAPS members raided the Falaza High School in the Usuthu area near Nongoma on Monday after receiving a tip-off and arrested a 16-year-old pupil.
The police received a complaint of fighting among the pupils and went to the school.
On their arrival, the principal handed over an Olympic 38 revolver with no serial number and four rounds of ammunition which he had taken from the suspect.
The suspect was released in the care of his parents.
The firearm will be sent to ballistic to establish whether it was used to commit any other crime.
