Drifting in Richards Bay this weekend
A 20 car entry will feature drivers from Johannesburg and Durban coming to sample this challenging course for the first time.
The inaugural Drift Event in Zululand is set for the ZCBF Oval in Richards Bay this Saturday.
A 20 car entry will feature drivers from Johannesburg and Durban coming to sample this challenging course for the first time.
The solo round will start at 4pm, where each driver does two runs on their own, with the top 16 going through to the Tandem Drift elimination round which starts at 6.30pm.
The drivers run a pre-determined course featuring left and right hand corners.
At no stage may they ‘straight line’, so the run is hugely spectacular as the cars are held in a wheel spin and sideways for the entire duration.
The Tandem knockout phase features the same criteria, albeit with two cars running simultaneously.
Competitors receive points for close proximity to one another and it is mind boggling to watch two 600bhp machines drifting and switching as they run side-by-side.
Drift stars
Mr Rock, Tim Stephens, will be the favourite as he wows the crowd with his smooth but aggressive style, while David Nell uses brute power from his Lexus V8 to obtain the same objectives.
Chris Landsberg of ‘Oval’ fame will be out to thrill along with Shane Ferreira, Joey Govender and the Puren brothers among a star-studded entry list.
Seventeen-year-old Melissa Nell will be out to prove to her older male counterparts that beauty has no limits as she drifts her BMW around the challenging course.
Preshu and his two brave sons will be giving demo runs in preparation for the forthcoming spinning event.
These eight-year-old boys perform donuts while perched on a tyre so they can see above the dashboard of their BMW.
Admission to the event is R60 adults and R30 for children.
Gates open at 1pm and full range catering services will be available.
