Steel giant promotes youth development

Tata Steel empowers local youth with job skills.

TATA Steel held a graduation ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, which saw local youth receiving certificates for successfully completing the company’s Process Operator Learnership programme.

With the main aim to empower youngsters with appropriate labour skills, TATA seeks to minimize local unemployment and skills shortages.

Managing Director Romeo Das expressed his gratitude to his senior management team for the significant strides they have made in training and mentoring individuals.

uMhlathuze Mayor Elphas Mbatha highlighted how initiatives of this nature worked to the benefit of the region’s progress.

‘This sharing of knowledge will facilitate the development of the town.

‘Searching for work without skills is difficult, and without education, one cannot make an impact in life.

‘It is through partnerships with Tata Steel and other companies that we will be able to turn things around,’ he said.

Mbatha said Richards Bay is one of the fastest growing areas in the country and a focal point for development.

The learnership programme was first implemented in 2006 and to date has assisted hundreds of individuals in their career development.
