Show your child some love, for heaven’s sake

Letter of the Week.

WE often ask the question, ‘What happened to this person for them to do this to another’ when another headline hits the papers of child on child abuse.

Foundations are set at home and morals are built on it.

Simple things matter. Simple things we do make a difference to how our children are, and will be while being raised in a society that has lost sight of the importance of a strong family bond.

Every morning I drop my child off at school and every morning without fail there is a mother that stops across from me.

Every morning her daughter gets out the car without being greeted as the mother immediately picks up her phone to start typing messages.

Her daughter starts walking away, turns back and waves, but has to shout ‘bye mommy’ at least twice before she is heard.

Then only does the mother look up and say bye, fleetingly, before returning her gaze to her phone.

I make a point of kissing my daughter goodbye every morning, I tell her I love her and I tell her to learn something and enjoy the after-school playtime.

She is confident and has a high self esteem. Simple things matter.

I am not perfect, but I believe these simple things have made a difference.

To the mother who places the importance of her phone before her daughter… put down your damn phone and pretend, at least for five seconds, that you actually do love her!
