Meerensee hijacker tracked down

Hijacking suspect nabbed hours after crime.

A MEERENSEE resident got the shock of his life, arriving home on Monday night, when he was ambushed by two armed men.

Surveillance footage showed how in only 18 seconds the man was assaulted and forced out of his white Toyota Hilux bakkie before the suspects sped off with his vehicle.

Police rushed to the scene and the 51-year-old victim was taken to Netcare The Bay Hospital for a head injury.

‘Through the collaboration of Matrix, Tracker, Richards Bay SAPS Detectives, SAPS Crime Prevention members and Flying Squad units, one of the suspects was tracked down and apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday morning in eNseleni,’ said Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Debbie Ferreira.

The suspect will appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday).

‘We expect further arrests to follow,’ Ferreira said.
