Last gasp goal gives Thanda win

Thanda beats Baroka United on home turf.

IT took a goal of supreme class to earn Thanda Royal Zulu a dramatic last minute 1-0 victory over Baroka United at the uMhlathuze Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

After dominating possession and failing to capitalise on an avalanche of opportunities, the goal – when at last it did come – was alone worth the entrance fee.

Nkosingiphile Ncobeni, who worked tirelessly throughout the match and was by far the stand-out player, latched onto a quick throw-in, cut inside, and drilled a powerful left-footed curler into the far corner of the visitors’ net.

The wonder strike sent the fair-sized crowd into raptures after 90 minutes of watching the Amabhubesi continually giving the ball away when in good scoring positions.

The second half, in particular, was an endless procession of attacks into Baroka territory, with hardly a shot on target to show for it.

The tight defence, with Junior Sekete playing a leading role and Samkele Mbambo in goal giving a flawless display, again kept a clean sheet, which augers well as they prepare to travel to Cape Town to take on Vasco da Gama on Sunday.

Substitute Sandile Mazibuko also deserves praise, his late entry into the game sparking Thanda to life.

Although the win and the three points that go with it were warmly welcomed by coach Vladislav Heric, he was far from pleased with his team’s effort, and they are sure to get a good tongue lashing at the next training practice.
