Month-end crime ‘shopping’ hits suburbs

Criminals find easy pickings in Richards Bay.

CRIMINALS have hit hard over recent weeks, with Richards Bay police attending to many complaints between 26 January and 2 February.

Two cases of rape and one of attempted murder were reported from Mzingazi.

Other crimes reported included:

House robbery

• Airfern Angle (Brackenham) 10.30am. Three men threatened domestic worker, demanded keys, locked her in a bedroom. She broke a window and alerted neighbours. Mercedes, TVs, cash, jewellery taken. Car found in eSikhaleni after it ran out of fuel.

• Summer Glades flats (Veldenvlei) 11.30pm. Complainant unpacking goods confronted by four males with firearm. Cellphone and cash stolen.

• Grace Cottages (Mzingazi) about 00.30am. Four armed men broke in while person was sleeping. Cash, shoes and laptop taken.

Business robbery

Engen garage (Alton) 4am. Three men with firearms. Cashier threatened and forced to hand over cash.

Robbery aggravated

Pelican Parade (Birdswood) 1.45pm. Grass cutters confronted by two armed men who fired one shot. Three brush cutters value R22 000 taken.

Burglary residential (12 cases):

• Avokadokroon (Arboretum Ext). Sometime over weekend. Garage forced open, entry gained to house. Laptop and two TVs.

• Croton Curve (Veldenvlei) 1am-4am. Garage door forced, entry gained to house. Two TVs, laptop, cash, handbag, wallet, cell phone, Playstation. Car parked in yard stolen.

• Begonia Brim (Veldenvlei) 10pm-6am. Found garage window broken, entry gained to house. Bicycle, radio, wallet, TV, wine.

• Honeysuckle (Veldenvlei). 7am-5.30pm. Window broken, burglar bars forced. Laptop, jewellery.

• Heideheuwel (Veldenvlei) 11pm-10am. Garage door forced, entry gained. Toolbox, bicycle.

• Disa Dives (Veldenevlei) around 11am. Window forced open, entry gained. Clothing, copper water pipes.

• Cormorant Flats, (Meerensee) during night. Sliding door forced. TV taken.

• Cinnamon Crescent (Brackenham) 3-5pm. Chain on outside room cut. Gas appliances gone.

• Antelope Alley (Wildenweide) around 1am. Sliding door forced. DVD player, speakers, clothing.

• Flambouyant (Arboretum Ext) 1-6am. Garage door opened. Tools taken.

• Disa Dives (Veldenvlei) 6.30am-9pm. Sliding door forced. Flatscreen TV.

• Kruisbessie (Veldenvlei) 1am-9am. Window broken while asleep. TV and diagnostic equipment.

Burglary business

Eight incidents were reported, three of which were in the CBD and two2 in Alton. Thieves targeted tools, building equipment, computers, generators, mag wheels, speakers and liquor. Biggest loss was R300 000 worth of cables from a premises in Arboretum.

Theft Out of Motor Vehicles remains a problem as opportunist criminals smashed their way into nine cars during the time period, almost all during daylight hours at car parking lots in the CBD.
