Mtuba’s future finance whizz

Amukelwa Gumede of Ikusasalethu Secondary School near Mtubatuba gets 7 distinctions.

AMUKELWA Gumede of Ikusasalethu Secondary School near Mtubatuba was ‘over the moon’ on Tuesday morning after receiving his matric results.

The seven distinctions Gumede achieved came as no surprise to him or his parents, but they were thrilled nonetheless.

He achieved a complete set of distinctions – IsiZulu (home language), English (first additional language), mathematics, life orientation, agricultural sciences, life sciences and physical sciences.

Based on his Grade 11 results, Gumede was accepted into the University of Cape Town (UCT) a few months before writing his final exams.

He will study actuarial sciences for the next three years.

When asked what prompted him to choose such a degree, Gumede said simply that it ‘highlights my undying love for mathematics’.

The degree will deal with calculating financial risk, which will see him more than likely go into banking once qualified.

‘Actuarial sciences opens me up to employment in the whole world, with good opportunities in South Africa to begin with,’ said Gumede.

Ikusasalethu Secondary School Principal Mr Khathi was overjoyed at Gumede’s achievements.

‘Amukelwa is a fine young man who is highly dedicated and able to work well with both classmates and teachers. He is not a selfish young man and is always willing to help others’.

Gumede is heading down to Cape Town at the end of January, but for now he plans to sit back, relax and prepare himself for the next chapter in his life.

‘I am very grateful to all the teachers at Ikusasalethu Secondary who contributed to my achievements,’ said Gumede.
