Bleak future for bright pupils

Lack of funds hinders study plans for two Zululand matrics.

DESPITE passing matric with flying colours, Thandazani Ntombela and S’phamandla Ximba face a bleak future due to a lack of financial aid.

The 17-year-old Ntombela whizzed through his matric examinations with six distinctions, and has applied at UKZN to study medicine, while Ximba (18) is armed with five distinctions, and intends to study optometry at the same institution.

Both Ntombela and Ximba are proud products of Welabasha High School, Shwashweni which is in deep rural KwaMthethwa, under uMfolozi Municipality.

As the only hopes of pulling their families out of poverty, Ntombela and Ximba face a sad reality of ‘falling in the cracks’ if they don’t get the much-needed financial assistance to further their studies at university.

The parents of both bright young men are unemployed.
