Divers find child’s body

A 9-year-old girl who was believed to have drowned, was reunited with her family.

AFTER police divers searched fruitlessly for two days, the body of a 12-year-old drown victim washed up in the jet ski area opposite the Bay Hall yesterday.

The boy had been reported missing after last being seen in the water at about 7pm on New Year’s Day, after lifeguards had gone off duty.

At the time, a 9-year-old girl was also believed to have drowned, but she was later reported as having been reunited with her family.

Witnesses pointed out a spot to divers where they said the boy had swum to in an attempt to reach marker buoys some distance from the shore, where the sea bed deepens suddenly.

The divers, who also responded to New Year drown scenes at St Lucia and Tugela Mouth, searched the incident scenes for hours on Friday and Saturday as family members stood vigil while frolicking bathers seemed unaware of the drama taking place.
