CITY of uMhlathuze’s Ward 30 Councillor July Xulu has made a special appeal to the community of Vulindlela to break the silence on all forms of abuse.
Speaking at the 16 Days of Activism campaign held at Vulindlela Community Hall in KwaDlangezwa last week, Xulu said, ‘We can’t afford to become spectators when our people are being subjected to these forms of abuses like domestic violence, assault and rape in particular.
‘It is time we break the silence on these criminals activities, because keeping them under the carpet is not going to free our society.’
Xulu said acts of violence against women, children and the elderly were high in KwaDlangezwa, in particular in Vulindlela township.
‘Campaigns such as these should not only be supported, but should serve as a wake-up call to all of us to stop this violence,’ he said.
Chairperson of Operation Sukuma Sakhe, Nathi Nzimande, echoed Xulu’s sentiments and called for the protection of women and children.
‘We have to take a stand and say enough is enough. We cannot afford to be known as a violent nation. We need to blow the whistle on violence against our children, our sisters and our mothers.’
Other speakers addressing the community were ANC Youth League Branch Secretary Thembelani Ntshangase, Mtunzini Police Station CPF Coordinator, Warrant Officer MB Sithole, and officials from the departments of Social Development, Correctional Services and Legal Aid.
