Call to commemorate Madiba
Ring a bell, blow a vuvuzelas or beat a drum in memory of Nelson Mandela.
ZULULANDERS have been urged to join an international campaign to commemorate the first anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s death on 5 December in an innovative way.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead a global call for action for community centres, schools, individuals and places of worship to ring bells and sirens, use instruments, vuvuzelas and loudhailers at 9.56am TODAY, followed by a period of silence from 10am until 10.03am to pay tribute to Madiba.
The purpose of the commemoration is to remember and celebrate Mandela’s work and to inspire others around the world to be kind-hearted to humanity, which was what he stood for.
‘We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love from virtually every corner of the world and are grateful to each and every person who has shared how they have been touched by our beloved Madiba,’ said Chief Executive of the Foundation, Sello Hatang.
The set time symbolises the 67 years Madiba served humanity- six minutes and seven seconds from the ringing of bells and sirens until the end of the moment of silence.
The South African government in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation have planned a range of events and initiatives between 4 and 15 December to celebrate the legend. Other events and initiatives for the commemoration include a national biker’s breakfast run on 7 December and a Remembrance Walk on 12 December.
