Locals man up for CANSA

Wise men take the PSA test.

THE CANSA uThungulu ‘PSA Challenge’ had more than 50 takers as local males lined up at the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre on Saturday morning for screening.

The initiative saw a steady stream of ‘over 40s’ fill their forms, take their seats and endure a tiny needle prick as qualified nurses took the potentially life-saving blood samples.

These will now be examined in laboratories, and any abnormalities found in the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests will be referred to medical professionals.

‘This has been a great response for a first time event and we hope to roll this out to all CANSA offices in the country,’ said Community Mobiliser, Lizelle van Zyl.

‘Who knows how many lives might have been saved through this effort?

‘If nothing else, it has drawn more attention to male cancers and the need for early detection of warning signs, and this was our primary aim.

‘Our many thanks go to the nurses and volunteers, Boardwalk Inkwazi, Empangeni Rotary, the Zululand Observer and others who made this historic event possible.’
