Saving lives a top priority

Lifeguards are ready for festive season.

WITH the festive season just around the corner, the Empangeni Lifesaving Club were drilled and put through their paces on Sunday at Alkantstrand by Durban SA Life Saving Association members, Sidney Makwanazi and Trin Pelican.

The group of lifeguards completed the qualification re-test, which saw the local volunteers being challenged by both theory and practical.

The lads had to complete a 200m beach run, 300m swim in the ocean, paddle 300m out to save a ‘patient’ with their Malibu boards, 300m swim with a torpedo to rescue a ‘patient’, use the spinal board 10m into the sea and practice communication signals.

The group is quite confident of their skills and fitness levels, but urge bathers to be extra careful over the festive period.
