CITY of uMhlathuze Ward 23 Councillor Andre de Lange has heaped praise on the community of Dumisani Makhaye Village for their stance in fighting against illegal dumping.
De Lange was speaking to the Zululand Observer during a clean-up campaign and a door-to-door focus on illegal dumping and waste management organised by the City of uMhlathuze Waste Management Section.
‘I can safely say about 80% of this area is clean, and it’s all credit to this loving community. We are here to re-emphasize the need to preserve a healthy environment.
‘So far I’m pleased with how this community has been cooperating and responding on the issue of keeping this township clean.
‘We only encounter rubbish when there has been a wind blowing or in cases where we have sewerage leaks. The community here is looking after this place,’ he said.
The Dumisani Makhaye Village community was also addressed by officials from Wildlands Conservation Trust, uMhlathuze’s Waste Management Section and others from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.
Cllr de Lange also spoke about the process of electrification of houses in this area, now known as ‘Dark City’.
‘I can confirm to you that the process of electrification is moving at a fast pace. The era of ‘Dark City’ will soon be a thing of past.
‘We are fast approaching the ‘Light City.’ As we speak contractors are busy working on the project.
‘What has caused the delay was the wrong cables we received earlier.
‘This project was supposed to have been completed at the end of September, and now our target is the first week of December.
‘We have been assured by the contractors that come Christmas time, every household will have access to electricity.’
