No freebies for illegal merchants
Selling any sort of item on municipal property is illegal without the required licence.
PEOPLE selling cars or goods or display advertising items on municipal property are not allowed to do unless they have a valid licence says Municipal Manager, Dr NJ Sibeko.
This comes after the Zululand Observer published a letter in which a resident questioned the use of municipal property to sell cars, furniture and all sorts of items.
‘Did the pre-owned car ‘dealership’ displaying vehicles in the open space in front of the Zululand Observer offices get permission to do so? This area is surely municipal land and therefore public property and not for the use of commercial enterprises to display their goods,’ the letter writer asked.
According to Dr Sibeko, municipal officials do go around checking for licences and they do move illegal vendors along after warning them that what they are transgressing the by-laws.
‘The municipality is aware of the growing trend and we do our best do prevent these illegal vendors. The problem is after a couple of days they just return and set-up shop again. It is a never ending struggle,’ said Sibeko.
However, residents and legitimate business owners are not happy, saying the illegal practice makes the town look untidy, while also attracting customers away from business who must pay rent, licences and other expenses that come with maintaining valid business premises.
So where do we apply for vendor’s licence or is it where the cul desac starts?????
Why not take away their merchandise and let them pay a fine on each item they want back! That will teach them not to intrude or offend other republicans, and to respect others.
for how many years this has been done, there hasnt been any issues, just like the many speed camera’s well done UMH on becoming a business!
