SA’s most fuel efficient cars
The VW Polo 1.2TDI BlueMotion tops the list of most frugal cars in the local market.
FUEL consumption has become one of the most important aspects to consider when buying a new car these days.
Frankly, it’s a bit pointless owning a car and then not being able to afford to run it.
The VW Polo 1.2TDI BlueMotion tops the list of most frugal cars in the local market, expensive hybrids and impractical electric cars exempt.
VW claims that the Polo uses only 3.4-litres to 100km, but this super low figure was achieved in factory tests where every aspect of the journey was carefully controlled.
CAR magazine, a media leader in all things motoring, conducted their own tests in the Polo 1.2TDI BlueMotion.
They do this with every car, on roads in and around Cape Town to establish a ‘real life’ fuel consumption figure.
They use the same route to test all new cars and it involves open road driving as well as stop-and-go city commuting.
CAR established that the Polo is currently SA’s most frugal car with a ‘real life’ fuel consumption figure of only 4.08-litres to 100km.
They even rate the Polo above hybrid vehicles like the Honda Jazz (5.28-litres/100km) and Toyota Auris (4.7-litres/100km).
The only vehicles which are less thirsty than the Polo is the Nissan Leaf, which is an electric car with an electrifying price tag and suspicious range (185km on a full charge), and the Porsche Panamera e-hybrid which at R1.38-million puts it out of reach of Joe Average.
Other affordable cars with excellent fuel consumption figures are the Volvo V40 D2 (3.6-litres), Ford Fiesta 1.6TDCi (4.32-litres), Citroën C3 eHDI and DS3 eHDI (4.4-litres), Toyota Yaris XS HSD and Auris XS HSD (4.56-and 4.7-litres), and Audi’s A1 1.6TDI and A3 TDI (4.7-litres).
