Teen fights for her life after car crash

The Richards Bay woman was injured after her car skidded off the wet road and hit a tree on Sunday morning.

ON the brink of starting her new career in the hospitality industry, Richards Bay resident Carina du Plessis is now fighting for her life at Netcare The Bay Hospital following a car crash in Richards Bay on Sunday morning.

Carina (19) sustained major injuries after her car skidded off a wet road and hit a tree near Green Africa Nursery just after 6am.

She was immediately transported to hospital where she is currently in a critical condition in ICU.

‘Carina is in a coma and has sustained multiple breaks including her back and neck,’ said her mother Erika.

Doctors are hard at work, however it will be a long road to recovery.

The 2013 Richards Bay High School matriculant had just got her foot in the hospitality door, with the help of Protea Hotel, Richards Bay, after being accepted for a three-year training programme at the five star African Pride Crystal Towers in Cape Town, offered by The Protea Hotel group as well as a six week block training at the Capsicum Culinary Studio in Cape Town, the largest Chef School in South Africa.

Erika would like to express her gratitude to everyone who has offered their support, as well as Netcare The Bay Hospital staff and the Richards Bay Fire Station.

A second accident occurred on the R619 near Aquadene, Richards Bay involving a taxi and a light motor vehicle in the early hours of Saturday morning. One man died and eight others were taken to Ngwelezana Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

It was so unbelievable to see a car crashing into a tree like that, for a moment after it happened I just wished that there was nobody in that car, but then again I came to my senses that the car wouldn’t drive itself. Am praying for you young lady.
