Go batty at the spa

The Bat Interest Group of KwaZulu-Natal is presenting an informative talk and night walk.

THE Bat Interest Group of KwaZulu-Natal is presenting an informative talk and night walk at the Natal Spa on the road to Paulpietersburg on Saturday, 1 November at 3.30pm.

Bats are mostly known as nocturnal, furry and spooky, but they are also an important part of our environment and in need of protection.

According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, 20% of bat species are threatened with extinction.

Around the world, bats can be found making their home in almost every environment conceivable.

They roost in caves, tree hollows, foliage and man-made structures.

The main threats to bats are the loss of their roosting and foraging habitats.

Bats are the main predators of mosquitos and night-flying crop pests. They eat thousands of insects each night and are critically important to our environment and our crop and timber farmers.

After the talk participants are invited to stay and join bat group members on a ‘bat walk’ as they set up nets and traps to try and catch some of the bats flying around the spa grounds.

Bat group members will show you how to listen to bats with bat detectors as they hunt in the night skies.

Entry to the talk and the spa is free.

There will be a spit braai (R140 per person) after the walk.

For catering purposes, book for the braai in advance at adminspa@goodersons.co.za or phone 034 9950300.
