Police find assault rifle near Mtunzini

The 53 year-old suspect was found at his home with the firearm hidden in a ceiling board.

AN unlicensed police issue G3 assault rifle recovered in a sting operation of Friday is being checked against possible links to high profile criminal activities.

Members of Empangeni Crime Intelligence and the National Mobile Train Unit conducted an intelligence driven operation at Mtunzini, Matholonjeni reserve following a tip-off.

According to the information, the suspect was a policeman from the KZN government attached to Empangeni Crime Intelligence; he then stole the firearm before he left the police service 10 years ago.

The 53 year-old suspect was found at his place of residence and the firearm was discovered hidden in a ceiling board.

‘The firearm had no ammunition but looked very fresh and oiled, showing it had been looked after over the years,’ said a member of the task team.

‘The suspect failed to give an explanation about the weapon and he was then arrested and charged for possession of an unlicenced firearm.

‘The rifle will be sent for ballistics examinations to see if it was used in any criminal activities such as armed robberies, faction fighting and rhino poaching.’

The suspect, who was identified, will appear at the Mtunzini magistrate’s court today (Monday).
