
FANIZA Mbuyazi, one of two suspects in an armed robbery near Mtubatuba, was almost killed by an angry mob.
The 41-year-old and two accomplices are reported to have robbed the Mzilikazi store in Mfekayi Reserve at gunpoint around midday on Sunday.
Cigarettes and cash amounting to R300 were stolen before the suspects fled the scene. Eyewitnesses gave chase and caught Mbuyazi while his two accomplices got away in a white Toyota Corolla. Mbuyazi was badly assaulted by the angry group.
KwaMsane police officers were notified of the armed robbery and immediately started patrolling the area. The vehicle was located and a search of the car and the two occupants revealed cigarettes, thought to have been stolen in the robbery, as well as a firearm which was seized by the police.
Muhle Gumede (34) was arrested and charged with armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Mbuyazi (41) was arrested and charged with armed robbery. The third suspect was not arrested.
Gumede and Mbuyazi appeared at the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was remanded to next Monday.
