Campaign promotes children’s palliative care

How can you support the Zululand Hospice Association.

THE Zululand Hospice Association staff joined in the social media campaign, #Hatsonforchildrenshospice today to raise awareness of children’s palliative care and the valuable members of a children’s palliative care interdisciplinary team, who work together to provide holistic and coordinated care to children and their families.

People working in the field of children’s palliative care often wear many hats, particularly in less resourced settings and the campaign aims to commemorate World Hospice and Palliative Care Day and raise awareness of issues related to Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care.

Owing to the holistic nature of children’s palliative care it is ideally provided by a multi-disciplinary or inter-disciplinary team of professionals and other people who have received appropriate training in the field.

The members on a children’s palliative care team will vary according to the needs of the child and family as well as the available resources of the organisation.

Members of this team can include but are not restricted to paediatricians, doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counsellors, teachers, dieticians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, child life specialists, play therapists, spiritual leaders, music and art therapists.

Many people do not even know that hospice and palliative care services for children exist and the public can help by raising awareness through their social media contacts.

How you can support

• Make a donation or hold a ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ or a ‘High Tea’ where guests are required to wear hats and make a contribution.

• Schools or businesses can host a ‘hat wearing’ day and children or employees can make a contribution.
