Protesters block R34 with burning tyres

Disgruntled farmers workers blocked the R34 outside Empangeni.

MOTORISTS travelling on the R34 this morning found their way blocked by burning tyres, tree stumps, rocks and protesting farm workers.

Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mdlalose said the illegal protest took place because farmer workers from a nearby farm, were unhappy about the progress of a salary dispute.

‘The workers claim that they have not been paid for three months, have tried to make contact with the farm owners but nobody seems to be interested in communicating with them.’

After Mdlalose spoke to the protesters, the group dispersed and police cleared the road allowing traffic through.
