Armed robbery suspects arrested

Stolen goods to the value of R5 000 were recovered, as well as a firearm used in the robberies.

THREE men were arrested on Friday in connection with two armed robberies in Dukuduku last Thursday night.

The trio is thought to have been responsible for many similar crimes in the area.

Sibongiseni Buthelezi (25), Sithembiso Mbuyazi (20) and Xolani Khumalo (20) are accused of holding up two pedestrians at gunpoint at about 6pm.

The suspects stole the victims’ cellphones before moving on to a next victim. A short while later, the trio robbed a nearby house, also at gunpoint, and stole another cellphone, an axe and other items.

A sting operation on Friday morning led Mtubatuba detectives to the suspects who were arrested at about 11am.

Stolen goods to the value of R5 000 were recovered, as well as the firearm used in the robberies.

Although the firearm had not been reported stolen, it does not belong to any of the suspects. Its official owner is being tracked down and will be questioned once located.

The three suspects were charged with armed robbery, possession of stolen goods and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

They appeared at Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court on Monday and their case was remanded to 15 October for further investigation.
