Gale-force winds shut port

Port closes, but airport flies by inclement weather this week.

RAGING gusts of wind sweeping across Zululand this past week forced the Port of Richards Bay to close on Tuesday and yesterday (Wednesday).

According to the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), gale-force winds reaching 80km/h and high swells of 3.8 metres, became perilous at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The harbour was then temporarily reopened at 6am yesterday before closing again at 9.45am.

Surprisingly, the inclement weather has not affected flights to and from Richards Bay Airport.

Richards Bay’s SA Express Station Manager Erica Bates said no flights were disrupted.
