YOU get rugby fans and then you get total, radical zealots.
Empangeni Dog Unit member Captain Chris de Wet is one of the latter.
The fanatical Blue Bulls supporter has featured many times in the Zululand Observer, most notably in 2009 when he appeared on national TV as Vodacom’s ‘Player 23’ at Loftus Versveld stadium.
His home, aptly located in Bulbul Bend in Birdswood, is decked in light blue memorabilia ranging from flags to wall hangings, amid the pictures and posters.
And now the front yard boasts his latest acquisition – a half-size fibreglass blue bull, especially made by renowned Pretoria sculptor Kobus Hattingh.
‘I actually wanted a full-size bull, but unfortunately his mould was destroyed in a fire,’ says Chris, who nevertheless is bullish about his new garden ornament.
‘I’m already taking flak from all the Sharks supporters who drive past, and I am expecting a paint ball attack… but they must know I pack a potent 9 mill!’
Chris denies that the bull, being hollow and lightweight (18kg), exemplifies his favourite team.
‘Ag, you know me. I can take all the jokes. My blood is blue and will always be, and I am not afraid to show my true colours – even in my own front yard!’
