Second bomb found at the lake
Protected by layers of mud, the bomb was still live and in perfect condition.
AFTER a search initiated by the Richards Bay Community Policing Forum today, a second World War II bomb was found and detonated at Lake Mzingazi.
The 4.5kg bomb, identical to the one discovered last Thursday, was again blown apart by members of the SAP Explosives Section at the edge of the lake, close to the Richards Bay Country Club.
Caked in hardened mud after lying on the bed of the lake since the war ended in 1945, the bomb was in excellent condition and was still active and dangerous.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife assisting in scanning the shores of the lake, where low water levels have exposed artefacts from the WWII Catalina flying aircraft base, found the bomb at around noon.
Concerned that there might be more explosive devices in the area, the Richards Bay SAP is planning a massive search operation, possibly with the aid of the military.
