Local Diwali celebrations off to electric start

Zululand Gopio Diwali Festival to light up Richards Bay and eShowe in October.

THE Zululand Diwali Committee has partnered with the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (Gopio), Zululand Chapter, to host this year’s festival celebrations in Richards Bay and eShowe on 17 and 18 October.

President of Zululand Gopio Chapter and Gopio International Africa Coordinator, Ishwar Ramlutchman, gave the thumbs ups to support the event during the launch of the now Zululand Gopio Diwali Festival held in Empangeni recently.

The function was well attended by a host of local dignitaries and stalwarts of the Indian and African communities.

Ramlutchman highlighted that the partnership will see communities benefit tremendously through its cultural and heritage programmes.

He said Diwali is a symbol of hope for all South Africans to unite as one nation.

‘We need to come together to celebrate the rich heritage that our forefathers have kept alive since they arrived in South Africa in 1860.

‘Gopio will also host a Diwali festival in eShowe’s Mpushini Park this year so people from remote areas can also benefit from our community development programmes,’ Ramlutchman said.
