Pupils’ substance abuse a concern
District Director speaks against drugs, lauds Inter School Peer Educators.
UTHUNGULU District Director for the Department of Education, David Chonco, has pleaded with school pupils to distance themselves from indulging in drugs, alcohol, unprotected sex and other substance abuse, which he said was rife in the district.
Speaking at the inter-school Peer Competition awards held last week at the uMfolozi Casino Resort, Chonco said the district was experiencing difficulties with pupils who indulge in substance abuse, thus losing focus on their studies.
He attributed recent disruptions and school violence which prevailed in the district to substance abuse by some pupils, saying crime was another threat.
Convenor of the event and an activist of My Life My Future campaign, Thoko Mnguni, said they decided to galvanise pupils from various schools in the uThungulu district, with the aim of helping them to fight social ills impacting negatively on their health and education.
