KWADUKUZA Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu hailed the first African Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Inkosi Albert Luthuli, during a visit to the Luthuli home in Groutville.
He was joined by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Mike Mabuyakhulu and other government leaders as part of the official launch of the 2014 Tourism month.
‘Many facts about Luthuli still remain in his family home; it is a fitting tribute today for us as government, working together with KwaZulu-Natal Tourism to visit the Luthuli Museum to immortalise his spirit,’ said Mayor Mthembu.
‘We take the fullest pride in paying tribute to this outstanding leader who contributed immensely to the radical political transformation agenda during his tenure as a leader of the ruling party and as a man of authority as a tribal Chief.
‘His life will continue to inspire the people of South Africa.’
He said, ‘South African history cannot be rewritten without mentioning Chief Luthuli as one of the greatest leaders in Africa after being acknowledged by the international community for his outstanding leadership during the times of the draconian rule of the apartheid government.’
Luthuli died at the age of 69 on 21 July 1967.
