Child dies in sugarcane truck tragedy

A chase for sugarcane snack ends in tragic death of 10-year-old.

A CHILD chasing a sugarcane truck in the Shikaifhela Reserve on Friday afternoon, hoping to grab hold of a handful of the sweet sticks, accidentally got wedged under and overrun by the vehicle.

Sandile Mnguni (10) is one of many young victims fatally injured in the popular game to pursue the sugary snack.

Mnguni was rushed to the local clinic at 4pm, but was found dead on arrival, with critical injuries on the right side of his body.

KwaMsane spokesperson, Jabulani Mdletshe said catastrophes like this could be avoided by spreading better awareness of the perilous activity.

‘This is not the first time an accident of this nature has happened and nor will it be the last,’ said Mdletshe.

‘Unless parents and schools teach their children about the dangers involved in this game, more young lives will be lost.

‘We urge adults to help stop children from running after sugarcane trucks.’

Second loss

In the same region, yet another child perished after being overrun by a car in the Mkombose Reserve.

Nine-year-old Wonderboy Mkhwanazi passed away at 4.30pm.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at the KwaMsane SAPS.
