Matrics urged to aim for the stars

The Department of Education demands 'A' symbols in matric.

MATRIC pupils from schools around uThungulu District have been issued a challenge to ensure they get nothing less than an A plus (95%) in their matric results.

This emerged at the Shooting for the Stars Conference held last week at Grantleigh School, near KwaMbonambi.

Speaking on behalf of uThungulu District Director, Dr LMMS Madondo said the district was no longer concerned about the pass rate of pupils who are doing matric, but was aiming for quality.

‘We know you are capable of doing well in your respective subjects. We know that you will all pass, but we want you to pass matric with flying colours. Yes, we are pushing for symbol As, and nothing less.

‘In you we see As, and getting As has nothing to do with your background, social status or colour. All we want from you is excellence. That is the message of the Department of Education to you.

‘I’m happy that your teachers are also here and listening. This challenge applies to them as well. They have a responsibility to change this notion that says maths and science are the most difficult subjects. Difficult in terms of what? Challenging yes, but not difficult,’ added Madondo.

The one day conference was organised by Winning Ways, which works in partnership with the Department of Education, in the Office of the District Director, David Chonco and the Office of Deputy Mayor of uThungulu District Municipality Thulani Mashaba.

Lwazi Lwanga, Coordinator for Winning Ways said they were grateful to have received support from both the Department of Education and uThungulu District Municipality, to encourage the best pupils of the district to aim high.

Well known motivational speaker, Pastor Sithembiso Zondo also delivered a short address.

  1. If you ask me- too little, too late.
Matriculants should be motivated like this at the beginning of grade 11.
