‘THE more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,’ said Dr Seuss and it is with this in mind, that Oxford University Press, the Independent Electoral Commission(IEC), and uThungulu District held a reading event at Ingqungqu Primary School.
The aim of the event was to encourage a reading culture among pupils and to emphasize the importance of reading as a means to preserve our history.
Phindile Miya from Oxford University Press led a discussion on how to keep a book ‘new’ and how to prevent damage to a book such as ‘hurting’ a book’s spine.
Miya demonstrated to pupils things they need to do and not to do, to keep their books in a good condition.
‘Books are the only way we can learn about our nation’s history that led to our democracy,’ explained IEC speaker, Lihle Luthuli.
Pupils and teachers were also given the opportunity to view books in a variety of genres that Oxford University Press brought along especially for the occasion.
