Walking for a healthy lifestyle

Take part in uThungulu Big Walk and promote a healthy lifestyle through walking.

TO encourage a healthy lifestyle and promote social cohesion, the Department of Sports and Recreation in uThungulu region will host The Big Walk annual event at eSikhaleni Township next month.

It is a non-competitive event, with activities undertaken by walkers, individually or in groups.

The main purpose is to create awareness about various social ills, including breast cancer, crime and drug abuse, women and children protection.

According to uThungulu Sports Promotion Officer, Sifiso Ndlovu, it will provide individual development through walking and develop a positive attitude towards lifestyle recreation.

Ndlovu said people should enter with the aim to improve their physical fitness, acquire better walking skills and to enjoy outdoor physical activities.

‘We encourage an active and winning nation through participating in various sporting activities, and walking is one of them.

‘We will apply a day-time walk, on roadways surface for two events. There will be a 5 KM and 10 KM walks.

‘We have targeted people between five and 80 years old to participate in the event,’ said Ndlovu.

‘The Big Walk gives opportunity for marketing strategies and exposure, establish good partnership between private companies, government departments and local municipalities.

‘We request churches, schools, and athletic clubs from the district, government employees, private sector employees and community members to join this initiative, to make this event a success.’
