Former union boss blasts black parents

Former learner promises to build a new school.

BLACK parents should be intimately involved in the education of their children in the same way their white counterparts are.

That was the sentiment expressed by former NUMSA President Cedric Gina, speaking at a farewell function of four educators from the Isigisi Primary School, outside Ngwelezane.

Gina, a product of the school, said he was disturbed by the attitude of some parents, whom he said were not taking education seriously.

‘I have to say this, and I’m not being racist. If there is school meeting convened by the principal here or in any other rural schools, our black parents don’t bother to attend , but if there is a school meeting convened at former Model C schools, you see them showing up in big numbers. What do you call that?

‘Parents need to be at the forefront of education. Fostering a culture of teaching and learning at schools cannot be the sole responsibility of teachers and learners only. Our parents must also play their part in the campaign to create a learning nation,’ he said.

The former SABC board member and current Trade and Investment Board KZN member, who recently lured businesses to helped revamp his old school, also spoke about one of his dreams.

‘I am a dreamer, and I dream of a ‘city’ called Isigisi Primary School. My dream is to see this school looking like a city, and this will happen. I am committing myself to starting the building of this school from scratch.

‘There is so much history here. It has produced numerous professionals, and therefore I see no reason why it cannot look like a city. I’m talking about a state of the art facility, with laboratories and computer centres. Trust me, this is not a pipe dream,’ said Gina, who admitted to having played dice during his days at Isigisi Primary.

School Principal ME Khoza praised the four educators for their tireless efforts in nation building, describing them as true soldiers.

The four educators are Njabulo Khathi, Dunyisiwe Hadebe, Magaret Mjadu and December Mlambo.
