Violence erupts near Melmoth

Four men in court for public violence.

THE Melmoth SAPs and Public Order Policing units arrested five people for public violence on Monday in the Ekhuthuleni Area outside Melmoth.

The local community blocked roads, set houses alight and fired shots at the police and damaged police vehicles.

The community is dissatisfied with the allocation of RDP houses. Approximately 200 people carrying sticks and bush knives gathered at the homestead of William Mnyandu, the Chairperson of the Development Committee.

The roads were blocked with burning tyres and hampered police intervention.

The crowd managed to set alight and extensively damage three houses of the members of the Development Committee.

A case of public violence and arson is being investigated.

The following persons appeared in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court on charges of public violence Balungile Hlabisa (33), Welcome Ntuli (35), Nkosinathi Zulu (28) and Phumzile Nene (20).

The case was remanded to the 5 September and all accused remain in police custody.
