Bay welcomes cancer awareness ride
Cancer awareness campaign revs into Richards Bay next month.
LOCAL oncologist, Professor Amo Jordaan has added his weight behind a cancer awareness campaign which will be revving into Richards Bay next month.
The No Rules Motorcycle Club and Cancer.vive, a network of individuals raising awareness and education of the importance of early detection of cancer, is hosting a sundowners bikers run on 28 September and an awareness campaign at Richards Bay High School and ‘Conquerors Tea’ for cancer survivors at the Richards Bay Medical Institute (RBMI) the following day.
Bikers will meet at the Richards Bay Caltex Service Station at 4.30pm on the Sunday and ride to the Look Out Point in Meerensee for a ceremony where Professor Jordaan will talk on the importance of early detection and warning signs of cancer.
The campaign is part of a week long ride which sees a group of over 50 cancer survivors, supporters and crew travel more than 2 300km through Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State on motorcycles and other vehicles, taking a message of hope and inspiration to thousands of people.
Awareness of the so called ‘shy cancers’, those that people find difficult to talk about and which often go undetected owing to fears of stigma and discrimination, cultural taboos and lack of knowledge, will be addressed.
Stories of survivors are told through music, dance and drama to promote awareness in different communities during the campaign.
