Records splatter in eShowe

The final round of the Zululand Athletics Inter-School Sports League will be at Grantleigh on 26 August.

NO less than 14 records tumbled in the Zululand Athletics Inter-School Sports League 3 held at the eShowe High School on Tuesday afternoon.

The third leg catered for the U14, U15, U16 and U17 age groups in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m distances.

Before the relay events, eShowe High was on top of the log, but Hoërskool Richardsbaai caught up and joined them on the top of the podium with 175 points each.

Third place was filled by Grantleigh (153 points) followed by Felixton with 123 points.

Fifth place went to Empangeni High with 120 points and Sunnydale with 113 points.

The final round of the league will take place at Grantleigh School on Tuesday 26 August.

Overall standings at present after 3 leagues heading into final round – 1 Grantleigh School 551 points, 2 Hoërskool Richardsbaai, 531 points, 3 Felixton College 507 points, 4 eShowe High School 398 points, 5 Empangeni High School 347 points, 6 Sunnydale High School 326 points, 7 Richards Bay Christian School 236 points and 8 St Catherine’s 158 points.

Records

Grantleigh athletes, Jarod Waldapfel (100m and 200m U14 boys) and Keagan Smith (400m U14 boys) broke three individual records in times of 11.87 seconds, 25.28 seconds and 1:00:56 respectively.

The Grantleigh U15 boys relay team also broke the 4X100m record in a time of 49.36 seconds.

Other individual records were broken by Daniel Ngonyama in the U16 100m boys (11.59 seconds), Khetela Mkhize in the U17 100m boys (11.6 seconds), Riebero Nceno in the U17 400m boys (55.47 seconds) and Nkanyiso Mhlongo in the U16 800m boys (2:13:12) all of eShowe High.

Josh Moonsamy in the U15 400m boys (57.86) from Hoerskool Richardsbaai and Malibongwe Masuku in the U17 800m boys (2:13:74) from Sunnydale also broke individual records.

The only girls’ record was broken by the U15 Hoerskool Richardsbaai team with a time of 59.53 seconds, while boys relay records were broken by the Felixton U16 boys and Empangeni U17 boys’ teams in times of 48.31 seconds and 47.6 seconds respectively.

Overall the standard of running was high and the stage is now set for the final round at Grantleigh on Tuesday, 26 August which will see the U15 and U17 age groups competing in field and track events.
