Frara expected at Fort Napier

Murder accused to undergo 30 day observation at psychiatric hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

THE case of the man accused of allegedly murdering his wife and prominent dance teacher, Carolyn Lathwood Frara in their Empangeni home last year, has been postponed once again.

John Edward ‘Johnnie’ Frara made a brief appearance at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court recently where the matter was postponed to 17 February 2015 pending an assessment at Fort Napier Psychiatric Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

Frara is expected to appear in court next year where he will, thereafter, be transported to the hospital by the Investigating Officer to undergo a 30-day observation.

Attorney of the accused, Johan van der Westhuizen, noted during proceedings earlier this year that a medical note detailing a recommendation by a local doctor stated that Frara sought medical attention from a specialised physician.

A psychological assessment was subsequently conducted and the outcome suggested further mental observation which will be carried out at Fort Napier.

It is alleged the couple were involved in an argument in the kitchen after Carolyn returned home from a dance practice. She was attacked and suffered multiple stab wounds to her head and body. Reports suggested that during his assessment, Frara said he was unaware of his actions at the time of the altercation.

In accordance with an agreement made with the defence, Frara’s bail was not opposed; however, conditions included that he hand over his passport, live with his daughter, report to the Empangeni Police Station every second week and pay R10 000 bail.
