Man arrested after St Lucia robbery

A suspected robber attempted to hide in reeds at the St Lucia estuary.

AFTER one robbery and at least one attempted robbery in St Lucia in the early hours of this morning, one of three suspects was apprehended after spending hours hiding out in the reeds.

The break-ins occurred between midnight and one o’clock this morning. Day Watch Security officers were alerted and found three suspects fleeing St Lucia just after 3am.

One of the three jumped over the bridge, into the estuary, and swam towards a large patch of reeds where he is thought to still be hiding out. The other two suspects fled into thick bush near the entrance to St Lucia.

SAPS was on the scene shortly after 7.30am. Day Watch Security officers started searching the reeds aboard an Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife boat but could not find the suspect.

The SAPS diving and dog units from Richards Bay and Empangeni have been called to the scene to conduct a more thorough search.

Shortly before 9am, Day Watch Security officers apprehended one of the two suspects hiding in the bushes.

He was taken into police custody and is currently being interrogated at Mtubatuba Police Station.
