All eyes on Pelican Island

Rising tides eat island road.

THE dual attack from Mother Nature and local litterbugs remains a concern for the anonymous ‘Pelican Island Protector’ (PIP) and his army of helpers.

For the past five years they have been extremely successful in restoring one of Richards Bay’s finest recreational assets into almost pristine state, thanks to donations of time, money and materials from environment lovers.

Barriers have been erected to prevent vehicles, especially quad bikes, from driving over birds’ nests and spoiling the dunes and beach, litter bins have been placed at regular intervals and regular clean-ups are conducted.

However, while the island is presently in terrific shape thanks to these efforts, there are still those who leave anything from booze bottles to disposable nappies lying on the ground.

‘It’s another appeal for everyone who enjoys this wonderful facility to just please leave it as you found it,’ says PIP.

‘Rubbish we can clear away, but the big problem now is the undermining of the road on the western side, opposite the NSRI base, due to global warming, rising sea levels and wave and current activities.

‘Local authorities are aware of the problem, but it is just one of many pressing projects they must attend to.’
