eShowe welfare told to move

Do you know of suitable premises for the eShowe Child and Family Welfare Society?

THE eShowe Child and Family Welfare Society is looking for new premises as the uMlalazi Municipality needs the building for its expanded Planning and Development Department.

A letter informing the welfare society was delivered on 23 June and a meeting with municipal staff was held 8 July.

The society, established in 1973, has had a 99-year lease with the municipality since 1995, after moving from its first premises near Boxer Cash and Carry.

The present building was sponsored by the then Zululand Joint Services Board and furnished by East Service Station.

In the letter, the municipality states it is supportive of the work done by the society and has promised to help find new premises. Those currently on the table are not suitable.

External organisations using the facilities and needing social workers include the Rainbow Circle, Doctors without Borders, the Departments of Correctional Services and Health through their nearby eShowe Clinic.

It is not clear if the municipality understands the role played by the society and the importance of the present position as it is reported that the municipality wishes to occupy some of the rooms which they believe are not being used as a matter of urgency.

This would mean that the confidentiality of the clients attending the society’s facilities could be compromised by officials from the municipality accessing the building.

A meeting between the society and the municipality is scheduled for Tuesday, 22 July and the aim is to establish a task team which will investigate alternative premises.

Anybody who has premises which could be suitable for the society is asked to contact the eShowe Child and Family Welfare Society on 073 3942776.
