One dead in Melmoth blaze
Melmoth counts the cost as fires fanned by strong winds threaten the town.
AT least one person has been reported dead and many houses destroyed in a massive fire around Melmoth last night.
Residents, including the Mthonjaneni Mayor Maureen Ndlangamandla, were evacuated from houses in early hours of the morning as fires from the Ndundulu area in the south and uMgungundlovu area in the north converged on the town.
Fire fighters fought throughout the night to control the fires and protect the town.
The Melmoth Golf Course on the outskirts of the town has also been burnt.
Mopping up operations and assessment of damage still being carried out. The town is currently without water due to damage to the infrastructure.
