FOUR-YEAR-OLD Lungisani ‘Kiki’ Ngubane, whose mutilated body was found in a church in eNcotshane last Saturday, will be laid to rest on Saturday.
The community assembled for prayer meetings this week, imploring God to intervene so that police recover the toddler’s missing body parts before the weekend’s funeral.
Lungisani’s dismembered body parts were found in a plastic bag inside a St John’s Church rondavel last Saturday, but an arm and his stomach were missing.
Angry residents burnt down the pastor’s house, the church and the house of a woman the community believed was involved. They later also torched the magistrate’s court where 15 residents, arrested for public violence, were kept.
The 51-year-old church pastor was arrested for the murder, but was released later owing to lack of evidence.
Ward Councillor Jackson Mkhwanazi said they hope no violence will emerge on Saturday and that the service will be conducted without incident.
‘Since the army and the police have been deployed in the area, there has been peace. We hope that the community will treat the funeral with respect,’ said Mkhwanazi.
KZN police spokesperson, Captain Thulani Zwane, said police patrols were still undertaken in the area to prevent more violence.
