MY husband owns a business in Hluhluwe and delivers goods to various schools in the rural areas.

He took some photos of what he found at one of the schools, but says that this is what he sees at others as well.

Although I hate to perpetuate negativity, I feel that perhaps if this is brought to light, something can be done to curb this insane waste of resources and blatant lack of concern over education. What is also a major concern is that many of these schools receive all sorts of assistance from local business on a regular basis to try and improve the state of schooling in the rural areas.

How can businesses be expected to continue giving when this is what is done with their generosity?

I am an educator at the tertiary level and when one sees this sort of thing it becomes obvious why our students are not able to cope at university!

I would love it if you could bring this to the Zululand public’s attention in the hope that this situation can be fixed.

  1. Sad to see the disrespect students have of others property including the disrepect some of them have on the teachers. Our children’s protection act has given the child to much power.. This is of great concern.

  2. Sadly, this is what happens when everything is just handed out to people for free and it is not earned or paid for. It is not appreciated and is abused.Education is precious and so necessary and resources for this purpose should be highly appreciated and used gainfully, not destroyed.

  3. This is a eyesight that needs real attension but it is up to the teachers to involve themselves with the pupils but here it shows the teachers only collect theire pay on the 15 of each mnth you are more then welcome to enter the gate at Eden Park school it is always a clean enviroment we teach our kids after break it is clean up time so I blame the teachers off that schools waiting goverment money you should be ashamed off yourself but I was taught what you see is what you get in your own houses and what a shock to the public but ok KZN will sign another check for you to get new desk and books

  4. Th school where the photographs were taken should be identified and the head teacher interviewed. Reading the comments by readers; Jackie, I hope, if you are a teacher, that your teaching standard is somewhat higher than the English spelling and grammar in your comment. Dave, in the United Kingdom, education is free up to university level and you would be hard pressed to find schools being treated in this manner. There are problems, but by and large the facilities are treated with respect.
