Terminal safe at millionth hour
The Richards Bay Coal Terminal achieves over one million hours uninterrupted by injuries.
THE Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) last week celebrated a safety milestone of more than one million hours unaffected by any incidents or injuries on site.
Its previous momentous accomplishment was three million LTI-free (Lost Time Injury) hours in December.
RBCT Safety Specialist, Bheki Ngcobo, attributed the feat to steadfast safety audits, near miss reporting, safety performance measurements and various programmes led by the terminal such as COBRA (Change of Behaviour Reduces Accidents) and VFL (Visible Felt Leadership).
‘The achievement symbolises the safety systems approach which is robust and effective as it is measurable, hence the positive results,’ said Ngcobo.
‘It is imperative to outline safety objectives and communicate them effectively so that every employee and contractor is excellence driven.
‘This achievement has also been made possible by each and every RBCT employee and contractors’ dedication to our safety improvement initiatives.’
With this year being earmarked ‘the year of safety’ for the terminal, the news was happily welcomed by the company’s more than 500 staff members.
‘Our next targeted milestone is to raise the bar to two million LTI-free man hours by this December,’ Ngcobo said.
