Another crash at roadworks
Fingers pointed at the contractors carrying out pothole repairs.
FINGERS are being pointed at the contractors carrying out pothole repairs along the R66/R34 stretch between Mtonjaneni Lodge and Ulundi after a near fatal accident on Thursday evening.
With the contractors working in the dark and little, if any warning of a stop/go control, the occupants of vehicles waiting to proceed were nearly killed by an oncoming ore carrier approaching the roadworks.
By the time the headlights of the ore carrier picked up the parked vehicles, the driver realised it was too late for him to stop and he was forced to swerve to avoid ploughing into the vehicles.
He was unable to keep the two-trailer articulated vehicle on the road and it crashed through the roadside barrier and down a steep bank before coming to rest.
To save his own life, he bailed out of the ore carrier before the cab crumpled under the impact.
It is not known whether the contractors have now completed the roadworks, as they were not on site on Saturday when two heavy-duty breakdowns spent most of the day to retrieve the ore carrier, after earlier attempts proved futile.
This is the same roadworks reported in the Zululand Observer last week, which left countless motorists damaging their vehicle tyres as they drove on the excavated potholes.
