Empangeni cops in the dock

Three police officers are in court on charges of corruption.

THREE Empangeni SAPS members appeared in the dock on Tuesday at the Empangeni Magistrate Court on charges of corruption and the case was adjourned for the first week in September.

Siphosethu Myeza (31), Nkululeko Mdunge (31) and Justice Gumede (45) all of Ngwelezane, were arrested in July 2013 following an investigation by the Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit.

The men, who pleaded not guilty, were granted nominal bail which has been extended until their next appearance.

According to court records, the officers while on duty had approached a parked vehicle with reclined seats occupying two passengers.

The man and woman in the vehicle were told they would be charged with public indecency and needed to pay up R3 500 bail to avoid being locked up for the weekend.

After having been given the run around, the couple called a friend who brought along R2 000 which they paid to the police.

Later that day, the police officers were arrested.
